Castanea Collective Farm is a vegetable CSA farm based in Peterborough county. We are excited to off sliding scale membership prices for our weekly baskets of fresh, chemical free, local... Castanea is the formal botanical name for chestnut trees. We have chosen the chestnut as our symbol because we believe that tree crops represent the potential for a more resilient and sustainable food system than the one we currently rely on. Tree-based agriculture can recycle nutrients more efficiently than annual agriculure, and without the need to till the soil. Having an extensive root system allows trees to withstand extreme weather and drought conditions much more readily than annuals such as corn or wheat, which is another reason why we are so gung-ho about planting trees for food production. As our climate becomes increasingly unpredictable, we hope that that our farm, and our community, will grow increasingly more resilient.
